Join us for the second installment in our winter lecture series! If you can’t make it in person, register for the Zoom Webinar below. GBBO project partners Paul Burow and Alexandra Urza will be talking about the ecology and stewardship of pinyon-juniper woodlands. While the talk will not be strictly bird-related, the conservation and management of these habitats is critical to the conservation of many bird species. The talk will start at 6:00 PM at Rosewood Nature Study Area.
Paul Burow is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Earth System Science at Stanford University. Alexandra Urza is a Research Ecologist with the US Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station in Reno.
Pinyon-juniper woodlands in the western Great Basin are experiencing local declines from wildfire and drought, resulting in impacts to ecosystems as well as to Indigenous communities. In this talk, we will describe emerging information and areas of uncertainty about pinyon-juniper ecology in an era of altered fire regimes and changing climate. We will discuss how new models of planning and collaborative governance provide an opportunity for stewardship of pinyon-juniper woodlands, focusing in on the Masonic Mountain Pinyon-Juniper Shared Stewardship Project near Bridgeport.
Please RSVP to outreach@gbbo.org if you are interested in attending in person.
