Please join us at the Walking Box Ranch near Searchlight, NV, March 23-25 2024 for a free workshop on Desert Thrashers on Avi Kwa Ame National Monument. In past years, our work in southern Nevada has demonstrated the importance of this area to Bendire’s and LeConte’s Thrashers in Nevada, two species showing steep population declines. This year, we are conducting a study on these two species on Avi Kwa Ame, with an emphasis on how human activities and infrastructure impact their distribution and breeding success.

We will have a classroom session on Saturday, March 23 to learn about these birds, Avi Kwa Ame, our past and present work, and how you can volunteer to survey for thrashers. On Sunday and Monday, March 24 and 25, we will then venture into the field to demonstrate survey techniques and hopefully see some thrashers. Sign up for either the classroom session, a field day, or both!

Topics Include:

  • Distribution, ecology, and conservation of LeConte’s and Bendire’s Thrasher

  • Avi Kwa Ame National Monument and its importance to thrashers in Nevada

  • Past and current research and monitoring

  • Visual and aural identification of thrasher species

  • Field techniques including how to identify breeding behavior

  • Survey protocol

  • In-the-field training
