Zoom Webinar: Joel Geier on Regional Christmas Bird Counts

Christmas Bird Counts are the original Community Science project. Beginning in the late 1800’s bird enthusiasts got together to count birds, and this is currently one of the largest data sets in existence. Now we use Community Science all over the place, from eBird to regional Shorebird surveys, and the Great Basin Bird Observatory’s own Pinyon Jay Community Science Initiative. Christmas Bird Counts happen all over the country, every year around Christmas time. The results of these counts produce useful data for researchers and allow volunteers a chance to get together and contribute to the collective scientific body of knowledge. Joel Geier is the regional compiler of Christmas Bird Count data for Oregon and Nevada, and during this presentation he will go over this year’s findings and notable sightings in the northern and western Great Basin.
