Located a bit further north than Reno, and often accordingly colder. Say’s Phoebe, Red-winged Blackbird, and American Crows typically do not stick around Elko in the winter time. There are often large flocks of American Robin and Cedar Waxwing, sometimes a rarer Bohemian Waxwing is seen. Visitors from the north like Merlin, Northern Shrikes, and Rough-legged Hawks are usually around as well. The often wintry Elko count circle includes much of developed Elko, the South Fork State Recreation area, and some Pinyon-Juniper habitat as well. The Elko Christmas Bird Count is organized by Lois Ports and the Bristlecone Audubon Society. Routes are assigned ahead of time so please plan ahead.
Please email Lois Ports NO LATER THAN December 10th if you are interested in participating.
