Ruby Lake Christmas Bird Count

  • Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge (map)

This count is scheduled for the day after the Elko count, if you are headed to eastern NV you might as well do a few counts! This count-circle is centered around the National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters, 37 miles south of highway 229 in Ruby Valley. Best access depends on snow conditions. There is usually a lot of open water around, and in most years there is an abundance of wintering finches, sparrows, and water fowl, including Trumpeter Swans. The foothills of the Ruby Mountains will probably be reasonably accessible, but in some years they are snowed in. This count is another remote one, but free lodging is available at the refuge. If you are interested, please reach out to Refuge Manager, Dan Dewey.
