Pinyon Jays: The Power of Community Science with Ned Bohman

  • Riverfork Ranch 399 Genoa Ln Minden, NV 89423 (map)

In 2021 The Great Basin Bird Observatory launched their Pinyon Jay Community Science program. This presentation is part of The Nature Conservancy’s Science and Nature Speaker Series: https://www.nature.org/en-us/get-involved/how-to-help/events/science-nature-speaker-series/. This presentation will cover the reasons for this particular volunteer effort, highlights and progress of the program thus far, and steps on how to get involved. Since its inception, we have engaged volunteers in 9 western states, nearly covering the entire range of the Pinyon Jay. This species has been experiencing major population declines over the past 50 years, and the specific causes remain unclear. The Pinyon Jay was petitioned for listing under the Federal Endangered Species Act in 2022, and is currently being reviewed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. These data being collected by the GBBO Community Science program are critical to their conservation, and you can help!.

Ned Bohman is the Outreach Coordinator for the Great Basin Bird Observatory and Secretary of the Nevada Bird Records Committee. He has been conducting bird surveys throughout the state of Nevada since 2015, and currently focuses on education and outreach projects.
